York is going to face some great changes over the next few years. With tuition fees set to increase, the refurbishment of the library due to be completed in the next academic year; and the increasing importance of Hes East, with the development of the sports village and movement of Langwith College in 2012.
All this however, means nothing without the academic standards and integrity of this university being upheld. After all, it’s the principal reason we’re here. Historically, York has suffered on Assessment and Feedback, achieving an average score of only 69% in the last National Student Survey, a score which I see as unacceptable for a world-class institution.
Assessment and Feedback will be one of my key focuses as Academic Affairs Officer, as to maintain our position as not only one of Britain’s, but also the World’s top institutions; something has to change. No longer can students be waiting over 6 weeks for feedback, as by then the feedback will have little influence on their next assignment, if it has not already been completed.
The increase in tuition fees from 2012 will cause huge changes in the university, and I want to ensure that YOU as the student body see these changes on the front line; through improved contact hours, teaching standards, and removal of hidden course costs, meaning no unpleasant surprises.
I pledge to meet regularly with the university to build a detailed plan of exactly where these fees are to be distributed; and will make absolutely sure that teaching hours and teaching quality, academic resources, feedback and support are right at the top of the agenda.
With the £20 million refurbishment of the library due to be completed next March, this “world-class” resource, as the university itself claims, will merit nothing less than 24-hour access during term times. I will fight on behalf of all students to ensure that this becomes a reality, as the years of disruption we have had to endure should not be for naught.
I have a proven track record when it comes to delivering on academic issues, helping the Chemistry Course Reps win the “Best Academic Campaign” at the YUSU awards last summer.
This is why I think I am the best candidate for the job and that you should vote Alastair for Academic Affairs.
Thank You.
